Monday, 10 Mar 2025

President Prabowo Subianto announced that Indonesia and Vietnam have agreed to enhance cooperation across various sectors, including politics, economy, defense, and security. This agreement was made during a joint statement with To Lam, the Secretary-General of the Communist Party of Vietnam, at the Merdeka Palace in Central Jakarta on Monday, March 10, 2025. Prabowo stated, "In our meeting, we agreed to strengthen our relationship and cooperation. We aim to elevate it to a comprehensive strategic partnership and truly want to enhance collaboration in nearly all areas." He emphasized the importance of cooperation in politics, economy, people-to-people exchanges, education, and science, aiming for effective economic integration.

In the economic sector, both nations set a trade target of $18 billion by 2028. Indonesia welcomes Vietnamese investments in various fields, including automotive and agriculture. Prabowo noted that such investments would bolster food security for both countries, stating, "We could even contribute to global food supply. We also agreed to collaborate in fisheries, digital economy, green economy, and emerging high-tech industries."

Regarding defense, both countries committed to strengthening cooperation, particularly in defense industries and joint military exercises. "We will exchange officers, enhance training, and agree to conduct joint patrols. We also support the ASEAN vision for 2045, which may be declared at the upcoming ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur this May," Prabowo added. Additionally, both nations have reached agreements in several areas of cooperation, marked by the signing of memorandums of understanding (MoUs).

"We have already established several collaborations in the areas of fisheries, engineering education, digital economy, and central bank cooperation," said Prabowo.

To note, To Lam's visit to Indonesia is a state visit marking 70 years of Indonesia-Vietnam relations. He is scheduled to stay in Indonesia for three days from March 9 to 11, 2025. In addition to the state welcome and meetings at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, To Lam will also meet with business leaders and heads of the MPR, DPR, and DPD RI during his visit.
