President Prabowo Subianto appointed Brian Yuliarto as the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, February 19, 2025. He replaces Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro, who faced significant criticism on social media due to a leaked audio recording in which he allegedly insulted staff at his official residence. Brian is a professor at the Faculty of Industrial Technology at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). His appointment is based on Presidential Decree Number 26P of 2025 regarding the Dismissal and Appointment of State Ministers for 2024-2029, which was announced by Nanik Purwanti, Deputy for Administrative Affairs at the Ministry of State Secretary.
"I swear by Allah that I will be loyal to the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia and will uphold all laws and regulations to the best of my ability in service to the nation," Brian stated at the State Palace in Central Jakarta on Wednesday. He added, "In carrying out my duties, I will uphold ethical standards and work diligently with a strong sense of responsibility." According to ITB's website, Brian graduated from ITB in 1999 and later pursued his master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Tokyo, Japan, completing his master's in 2002 and his doctorate in 2005.
Additionally, the announcement of the new appointment was mentioned by Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya in response to rumors of a cabinet reshuffle by Prabowo. However, he did not specify which officials would be appointed at that time and refrained from commenting further on the reshuffle rumors. "There will be an appointment of several officials this afternoon," Teddy said during the confirmation on Wednesday.
