The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, stated that the People's Schools require approximately 60,000 teachers. The People's Schools are an initiative by President Prabowo Subianto aimed at students from low-income families in the first and second income brackets. These schools are free of charge. "It was mentioned that we need 60,000 teachers," Mu'ti said at the Presidential Palace in Central Jakarta on Monday (March 10, 2025). He expressed support for the recruitment plan for teachers at the People's Schools, although the specific details are still under discussion. "We will determine the scheme later. We will either distribute existing teachers or recruit new ones. It will be a lengthy process," Mu'ti added.
Regarding the curriculum, the government is preparing two options. The first option follows the Garuda excellence curriculum or an international curriculum designed by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology. The second option adheres to the current curriculum in use. "The excellence schools follow international standards, specifically the Garuda curriculum. However, our curriculum (Dikdasmen) aligns with what is currently implemented in Indonesia," Mu'ti explained.
Previously, it was reported that the People's Schools are intended for low-income communities in the first and second income brackets. Prospective students in these brackets will take advanced academic tests to enroll in the People's Schools.
Minister of Social Affairs, Saifullah Yusuf, mentioned that 50 People's Schools are set to begin operations this year. The buildings will utilize around 40 centers and facilities owned by the Ministry of Social Affairs that are currently unused, as well as buildings from two universities, Universitas Brawijaya and UNESA in Surabaya. The schools will offer complete education from elementary to high school. "We will assess which ones are ready to start with elementary, which with middle school, and which with high school. But in the future, the levels will include elementary, middle, and high school," the Minister said.
