The head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati, announced that the peak of the dry season in 2025 is expected to occur from June to August. She explained that the peak will not happen simultaneously across all regions; some areas will reach their dry season peak in June. "In most parts of Indonesia, the peak dry season is predicted for June and July. So, it won't be uniform or simultaneous," Dwikorita stated during a press conference on BMKG's YouTube channel on Thursday, March 13, 2025. She added that other regions will experience their peak dry season in August.
"Some areas will see their peak dry season in June, others in July, and some will peak in August 2025," she noted. Regions expected to peak in June and July 2025 include Sumatra, western Java, northern Kalimantan, parts of Sulawesi, and central and eastern Papua. Meanwhile, areas that will peak in August 2025 include central to eastern Java, most of Kalimantan, much of Sulawesi, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, parts of Maluku, North Maluku, and some parts of Papua. Dwikorita explained that several regions facing drought will experience irregular or below-normal rainfall.
As a result, BMKG urges these areas to be cautious about potential drought disasters. "Those experiencing drier conditions need to be aware of low rainfall and the risks of drought or forest fires," she said. A below-normal dry season is predicted for northern Sumatra, small parts of western Kalimantan, central Sulawesi, North Maluku, and normal parts of Papua. In contrast, an above-normal dry season is expected in most of Lampung, West Java, Central Java, Bali, NTB, NTT, small parts of Sulawesi, and central Papua.
