Komdigi States That Social Media Restrictions For Children Are Not To Limit Information

, 09 Mar 2025

The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has clarified that the rules limiting children's use of social media are not intended to restrict access to information, but rather to create a safer digital environment. This was stated by Fifi Aleyda Yahya, the Director General of Public Communication and Media (Dirjen KPM) at a meeting on Wednesday (March 5, 2025). She mentioned that the government is currently drafting a regulation regarding children's social media use as part of President Prabowo Subianto's mandate. "This regulation is still in progress, so please keep us in your thoughts. Clearly, this is a step towards making the digital space friendlier and safer for children," Fifi said. She emphasized that the rules do not prohibit children from accessing social media but aim to regulate account ownership for better control. "If children want to use social media, they can do so with parental or teacher approval," she added. "We hope that the digital space can become a safer and more educational environment for children," Fifi continued.

In addition to social media restrictions for children, Komdigi reaffirmed its commitment to combating the growing issue of online gambling. "We remain dedicated to eradicating online gambling. Therefore, collaboration with various parties is essential for effective action," Fifi stated. She also mentioned that the government, through Komdigi and relevant ministries, will soon announce a schedule for new regulations concerning digital safety for children. "It will be soon. Once we have a specific date, we will inform you," Fifi concluded.
