Google Enhances Digital Security In Indonesia

Monday, 24 Feb 2025

Google has officially launched Google Play Protect with Enhanced Fraud Protection in Indonesia to boost user device security against digital threats, especially from apps installed outside the Play Store (sideloading). Putri Alam, Google's Director of Government Relations and Public Policy in Indonesia, stated that this feature has been tested in several countries and successfully protected 10 million devices worldwide. "We are now proud to extend our protection to the people of Indonesia. Such stringent security measures are not just about technology; they are also about building long-term cyber resilience for Indonesia," Putri said at the Komdigi office on Tuesday (February 18, 2025). This launch is a collaboration between Google and the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemenkomdigi), which has also been working to raise awareness about digital security in Indonesia. Google emphasizes that this innovation is part of a broader strategy to protect internet users in the country. The company has partnered with BCA bank to test the Google Play Integrity API to enhance the security of banking apps.

Additionally, Google Cloud's Vertex AI has been utilized to detect and prevent misuse of digital subscriptions, potentially reducing losses by billions of rupiah each month. To address the rise of online loan fraud, Google is collaborating with the Indonesian Fintech Funding Association (AFPI) through the Priority Flaggers program, which provides special access for organizations to report potentially harmful or policy-violating content. Furthermore, Google, along with GoPay and ICT Watch, has launched the "Judi Pasti Rugi" campaign, conducting financial literacy training in 10 cities to educate the public about the risks of online gambling.

In the YouTube ecosystem, Google is working to create a safer digital environment for children. They focus on three main pillars for child protection: providing age-appropriate high-quality content, tailoring the platform experience for different age groups, and promoting healthy digital habits for families. One specific action they are taking is testing a machine learning-based age estimation model in the United States before rolling it out to more countries, including Indonesia. This model aims to estimate users' ages and apply appropriate protections.
