Rice Production Is Expected To Reach 8.67 Million Tons By Early 2025

Friday, 14 Feb 2025

The National Food Agency (Bapanas) forecasts that rice production in Indonesia will reach 8.67 million tons from January to March 2025. Bapanas Head, Arief Prasetyo Adi, noted that this figure is 2.91 million tons higher than the same period last year. "From January to March 2025, we expect an increase of 2.91 million tons compared to the same period in 2024," Arief stated during a meeting with Commission IV of the Indonesian House of Representatives at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (February 4, 2025).

In the presentation, Bapanas also estimated that national rice consumption during January-March 2025 will be 7.77 million tons, reflecting an increase of 70,000 tons or 0.91 percent compared to the same period in 2024. With this projection, the balance of rice production and consumption for January-March 2025 is expected to show a surplus of 900,000 tons, which also indicates a rise of 2.91 million tons compared to last year. Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman aims for national rice production to reach 32 million tons in 2025. "The target is 32 million tons. Pray for us, God willing. It's just one year," Amran said at a press conference at the Ministry of Agriculture on November 26, 2024.

Amran expressed hope that the government would not need to import rice, aligning with the food self-sufficiency goal set by President Prabowo Subianto's administration. "Of course, if we achieve self-sufficiency, we shouldn't import. That would create more problems. Later, people will ask, 'Why is the Minister importing? We are supposed to be self-sufficient.' How can that be?" Amran remarked.
