The Government Confirms The Construction Of A 700 Km Sea Wall, Stretching From Banten To East Java

, 02 Feb 2025

The President's Special Envoy for Climate and Energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, announced that President Prabowo Subianto has decided to construct a massive sea wall stretching 700 kilometers from Banten to East Java. Hashim made this statement during the ESG Sustainable Forum 2025 event in Jakarta on Friday, January 31, 2025. He said, "The Prabowo government has decided to implement several programs, including the construction of a 700 km sea wall from Banten to East Java," as reported by Antara.

According to Hashim, the project aims to protect the rice fields located along the northern coast of Java. He highlighted the community's concerns about rising sea levels, which threaten fishermen's livelihoods.

Hashim explained that the idea for the massive sea wall was first proposed in 1994 during President Suharto's administration, recognizing the threat of rising sea levels. However, it has not yet been executed.

He estimated that the construction of the sea wall could take a long time, around 10 to 20 years. He emphasized that creating food estates in Kalimantan or Papua would be pointless if millions of rice fields are submerged due to rising sea levels. Therefore, he urged the public to support the construction of the sea wall. "It’s never too late for us to commit to protecting millions of hectares of the most productive and fertile rice fields located along the northern coast of Java," Hashim stated. Previously, President Prabowo Subianto had instructed his team to study the construction of a sea wall from Jakarta to Cirebon as part of the National Strategic Program for 2025.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto explained that the directive comes from an internal meeting led by President Prabowo Subianto regarding the development of special economic zones (KEK) and the completion of national strategic projects (PSN) for 2024-2025. Airlangga noted that the construction of the giant sea wall from Jakarta to Cirebon will connect with the flood control wall already built in Tambaklorok, Semarang, Central Java. For the giant sea wall project, the President has instructed that it be prepared under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) financing scheme. Airlangga mentioned that this giant sea wall is included in the PSN list for 2025 as part of efforts to enhance energy and food security.
