President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated the Jatigede Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA) located in the Jatigede Reservoir area, Sumedang Regency, West Java, on Monday, January 20, 2024. In his speech, President Prabowo officially announced the opening of the Jatigede PLTA and several electricity projects across 17 other provinces in a hybrid format. This means that all projects inaugurated by Prabowo on this day are spread across 18 provinces.
"Bismillahirrahmanirrahim, today, January 20, 2025, I, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, officially inaugurate strategic electricity projects in 18 provinces," said Prabowo. Several officials were present at the inauguration, including the President Director of PT PLN (Persero) Darmawan Prasodjo, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo, and Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir.
It is important to note that the construction of the Jatigede PLTA was initiated in 1963 during the presidency of Indonesia's first president, Sukarno. The actual construction took place during the presidency of the seventh president, Joko Widodo, starting in 2015.
The Jatigede PLTA operates by utilizing water flow from the Cimanuk River, which is dammed at the Jatigede Reservoir. The construction of the reservoir was carried out by the Ministry of Public Works. Water from the Jatigede Reservoir is channeled to the PLTA through a headrace tunnel and pipes, with a drop of about 70 meters. The water flows from a high point to a lower point at a rate of 73 cubic meters per second, turning two turbines, each with a capacity of 55 megawatts.
