The Minister of Immigration and Law Enforcement, Agus Andrianto, hopes that Indonesia's passport index will improve globally following the release of a new passport in August 2025. "We plan to launch the new passport in August. Hopefully, the innovations we are implementing will enhance the quality standards of the Indonesian passport. So, we hope it will boost the index," Agus told the media during the 75th Immigration Day event at the East Parking Plaza of Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) in Central Jakarta on Sunday, January 19, 2025. He added that one key difference between the new and old passports is the material used. "The difference lies in the materials, which now meet international standards," Agus stated. According to Kompas.com (December 18, 2024), the new Indonesian passport, known as the Merah Putih Passport, is set to be valid starting August 2025, specifically on Sunday, August 17, 2025. "This is likely what everyone has been waiting for, the Merah Putih Passport, which is scheduled to be issued on August 17, 2025," said Acting Director General of Immigration Saffar Muhammad Godam during a year-end press briefing in Central Jakarta on December 17, 2024. This red-covered passport aims to strengthen the Republic of Indonesia's passport in line with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The new Indonesian passport will feature various innovations. In terms of security, the biodata page will be made from polycarbonate with a special coating for surface protection. Additionally, the passport paper will include security features sensitive to chemicals. The design will also showcase unique fabric patterns from different regions in Indonesia, which will change appearance under ultraviolet light or sunlight.
This passport is designed to reflect the spirit of the red and white colors, said Saffar. It features a flexible heat-resistant cover that protects the electronic chip inside. The new Indonesian passport showcases white batik on the front, symbolizing Indonesia's spirit and identity. "The issuance of the Red and White Passport is an effort by Immigration to strengthen the Indonesian Passport in line with international standards and recommendations, as outlined in The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 9, Chapter 3, Subchapter C," he explained.
