The governments of Indonesia and Japan have agreed to collaborate on volcanic disaster management. This agreement was announced by Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba during a joint press statement with President Prabowo Subianto at the Bogor Presidential Palace on Saturday, January 11, 2025. "We have reached an agreement to implement cooperation in volcanic disaster response," PM Ishiba stated at the palace complex. He noted that this partnership is based on the similarities between the two countries in facing disaster risks, making disaster response crucial.
PM Ishiba also recalled the Aceh tsunami that occurred in 2004. "It has been 20 years since the major earthquake and tsunami struck the northern coast of Sumatra, resulting in many casualties and significant impacts," he said. "I would like to express my deepest condolences to the victims once again," Ishiba added.
Furthermore, Ishiba explained that the relationship between the two nations is rooted in human connections. Therefore, Japan has agreed to contribute to enhancing human resource exchanges. In addition to bilateral relations, both countries have also agreed to cooperate on international matters, recognizing the importance of maintaining and strengthening international order. "Moreover, we have agreed to further enhance collaboration in the international arena, including Indonesia's accession to become an OECD member," PM Ishiba clarified.
