PSSI has officially announced that Patrick Kluivert is the new coach of the Indonesian national team. He replaces Shin Tae-yong with a contract lasting two years until 2027, with an option to extend for another two years.
While coaching the Garuda Squad, Kluivert will be supported by several assistant coaches from the Netherlands, including Alex Pastoor and Denny Landzaat, along with two local Indonesian coaches. This information was shared by PSSI on their official website on Wednesday, January 8, 2024.
Before coming to Indonesia, Kluivert was the coach of the Turkish club Adana Demirspor. He also previously served as the academy director at FC Barcelona. Kluivert is expected to arrive in Indonesia on Saturday, January 11, 2024, and will be officially introduced to the public the following day.
Kluivert's debut will be against Australia at the Sydney Football Stadium on March 20 and against Bahrain at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on March 25. These matches are part of the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers for Asia, Group C.
Kluivert is a legendary player for the Dutch national team. He was a striker for top European clubs such as Ajax Amsterdam, AC Milan, Barcelona, CF Valencia, Newcastle United, PSV, and Lille.
After retiring as a player in 2008, the Amsterdam-born coach, born on July 1, 1976, began his coaching career as an assistant at AZ Alkmaar, NEC Nijmegen, and Brisbane Roar. He later became the coach of Jong Twente and won a championship title.
Kluivert also served as an assistant coach to Louis van Gaal for the Dutch national team, which finished third in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. In 2015, he was appointed head coach of the Curaçao national team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the 2017 Caribbean Cup qualifiers.
He has also served as the sports director at Paris Saint-Germain and the Barcelona academy, coached the Ajax A1 (U-19) team, and was an assistant to Clarence Seedorf with the Cameroon national team.
