PSSI has officially announced that Shin Tae-yong (STY) is no longer the coach of the Indonesian national team. This was revealed by PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir during a press conference at the PSSI office on Monday (January 6). STY received the news of his contract termination through the Indonesian national team manager, Sumardji.
"Mr. Sumardji met with coach STY this morning, and coach STY has received the official letter. There will be further processes regarding our ended relationship," Erick stated at the press conference.
According to detikSport, STY had a successful tenure with the Indonesian national team. Since he started coaching in 2020, he improved the FIFA ranking of the Garuda team from 174 to 127 in the world.
Additionally, the South Korean coach led the national team to the Round of 16 in the Asian Cup for the first time in history. He also guided the U-23 team to the semifinals of the 2024 Asian Cup and nearly took the national team to the Olympics, only to be stopped by Guinea in the final playoff round.
This dismissal surprised many football fans in the country, as STY's contract was supposed to last until 2027. However, Erick Thohir mentioned in the press conference that there were issues leading to STY's early departure.
Erick explained that STY was let go based on evaluations from the federation. One reason was the performance of the Indonesian national team in the 2024 AFF Cup, where the team did not advance to the semifinals and failed to get past the group stage.
"We see the need for a leader who can implement strategies agreed upon by the players, improve communication, and enhance the program for the Indonesian national team," said Erick Thohir.
During the same event, Erick Thohir mentioned that they have already prepared a new coach for the Indonesian national team, but the official announcement of STY's replacement will be made on January 12, 2025.
We have found the candidate. We will invite all media for a press conference on the 12th at around 4 PM. The candidate will arrive on the night of the 11th, and on the 12th, there will be a chance for the media to ask questions, Erick stated.
