Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has launched a Free Health Check program aimed at reducing deaths from non-communicable diseases like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. The initiative plans to reach 60 million Indonesians in its first year, 2025, with a goal of 200 million people over the next five years. The program focuses on prevention rather than just treatment. Presidential Communications Office spokesperson Dedek Prayudi emphasized that President Prabowo prioritizes disease prevention and free health checks to lower mortality rates from cardiovascular and other non-communicable diseases.
"Health screenings and free check-ups will be available to all segments of society at every stage of life, as President Prabowo wants the Indonesian people to stay healthy," he stated in a press release received by Kompas.com on Friday, January 3, 2025.
Dedek noted that President Prabowo's view on health goes beyond treating the sick; it emphasizes the importance of promotional and preventive efforts over curative actions. Since his inauguration on October 20, 2024, President Prabowo has committed to reducing deaths from heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, which claim thousands of lives each year. He believes that the free health check program will be crucial for early disease detection, reducing risks, and preventing avoidable deaths.
Data from the 2023 Social Economic Registration (Regsosek) indicates that non-communicable diseases are the leading cause of death in Indonesia, with over 600,000 fatalities annually due to cardiovascular diseases. Dedek pointed out that this number is nearly equal to the population of Cimahi City in West Java.
The Prabowo-Gibran administration sees this issue as urgent and deserving of special attention, he stated. Conditions like hypertension, high cholesterol, and heart attacks can be reduced or even prevented with regular health screenings. To support the Free Health Check program, President Prabowo has allocated a budget of Rp 4.7 trillion in the 2025 State Budget. "For President Prabowo, there is no other option but to take bold preventive measures to improve public health. The Free Health Check is a key initiative of President Prabowo Subianto for 2025," said Dedek. This program is a strategic move by the government to lessen treatment costs by focusing on disease prevention.
