Tuesday, 26 Nov 2024

The Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta has launched the Malaysia Gastronomy Truly Asia 2024 initiative, aimed at showcasing the distinctive cuisine of the nation to the world. This initiative represents a form of soft diplomacy employed by the Malaysian government to promote its culture through culinary arts.

"Malaysian recipes are a reflection of our national identity, blending flavors from Malay, Chinese, Indian, and foreign communities into a harmonious tapestry of taste," stated the Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia, Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin, during the launch event held at Le Meridien Hotel in Jakarta on Monday, November 25, 2024.

The event was attended by several foreign ambassadors in Jakarta, where the Malaysian Embassy presented a variety of traditional dishes, including Penang asam laksa, popiah basah, and nasi lemak. Attendees, including the Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia, Masaki Yasushi, were invited to observe the preparation of some of these dishes firsthand.

Ambassador Hussin emphasized that each traditional Malaysian dish served carries a historical background and philosophy. "Every Malaysian recipe tells a story of history, culture, and the traditions of the communities that have passed it down through generations," he remarked.

"For instance, Penang asam laksa, a special recipe from Penang, narrates the fusion of Malay, Chinese, and Peranakan culinary traditions." According to Ambassador Hussin, food serves as a universal language that can unite individuals from diverse backgrounds. Therefore, Malaysia aims to share its stories and history through gastronomy.

He expressed hope that this event would not only strengthen Malaysia's bilateral relations with Indonesia but also with other ASEAN countries. (ridwan@insightinnews.com)
