, 24 Nov 2024

By ridwan@insightinnews.com The Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi), Meutya Hafid, stated that investment in generative artificial intelligence (AI) in Indonesia has surged more than sixfold. This increase has occurred over a three-year period from 2021 to 2023. Generative AI refers to a type of artificial intelligence that aids in the creation of new content or solutions to problems. "In recent years, AI has seen significant advancements, which is evident from the rising investment trends in generative AI within the private sector, escalating from 4 billion USD in 2021 to 25 billion USD in 2023," Meutya remarked during the Indonesia AI Day 2024 event in Jakarta on Thursday, April 14, 2024. Furthermore, the rapid development of AI has also positively impacted the job sector globally. In high-income countries, AI has influenced 60 percent of jobs, while in middle-income and low-income countries, the impact is 40 percent and 26 percent, respectively. A similar positive trend is observed in global north countries, which dominate the demand for AI-related jobs worldwide. The United States leads in demand, followed by Spain, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, and France. "This trend indicates that the global north continues to dominate the landscape of AI development and utilization on a global scale," Meutya noted. "This situation presents both opportunities and challenges for global south countries, including Indonesia, to enhance public trust in the governance of artificial intelligence," she said. Meutia further elaborated that government institutions in Indonesia have begun to implement AI technology for public services within their respective sectors, albeit to a limited extent. For instance, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has developed AI technology to detect fake news or hoaxes circulating in the digital space. Additionally, the Directorate General of Taxes at the Ministry of Finance has created an AI-based chatbot to assist taxpayers in accessing information and services more conveniently. The Ministry of Health is also advancing and utilizing AI in healthcare technology, particularly in the fields of radiology and pathology across several hospitals. "The Indonesian government remains committed to establishing a comprehensive AI governance framework by formulating policies that support the AI ecosystem, taking into account the three aspects of 3P: policy, people, and platform," she added.
