Parents often overlook the importance of digital safety for teenagers. A study by TikTok and YouGov found that 61% of parents only discuss digital safety when their child faces a problem. Diena Haryana, the Founder of SEJIWA Foundation, points out that this lack of awareness stems from parents' limited understanding of the digital world.
"We meet with parents and students, and many parents don't know how to use it," she said at the TikTok Teen Safety Campaign 2025 press conference in Jakarta on February 13, 2025. Many parents are reluctant to learn about the internet, thinking it’s not relevant to their generation.
They are unaware that some platforms have features to protect children from inappropriate content. "They don’t know the features available on social media," Diena noted. As a result, many parents simply forbid their children from using the internet, which only increases the children's curiosity and leads them to find ways to access it on their own. Instead of imposing bans, parents should start learning about technology and the digital safety features available.
Therefore, according to Reda Gaudiamo, a Parenting Creator on TikTok, it is crucial for parents to utilize all the platform features that help them monitor their children's internet use. "It is the parents' responsibility to guide their children," she emphasized.
