E. Aminudin Aziz has officially been appointed as the Head of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia (Perpusnas). The appointment ceremony was conducted by the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu’ti, at Graha Utama, Ministry of Dikdasmen, Jakarta, on January 7, 2025. In his speech, Minister Abdul Mu’ti emphasized that the Ministry's main task is to educate the nation's children. “This is a crucial responsibility that will shape the dignity and future of our nation,” he stated. He expressed hope for innovative and smart breakthroughs while maintaining good practices established in the past. Furthermore, he urged the newly appointed leaders to embody the qualities of being "SANTUN" (polite). “You must be leaders who are Loyal, Trustworthy, Nationalistic, Exemplary, Excellent, and Caring,” he elaborated. Before his appointment, E. Aminudin Aziz served as the acting Head of Perpusnas for 13 months. After the ceremony, Amin shared that his time as acting head involved many challenges that required solutions. He explained that the role of Perpusnas, according to regulations, is to oversee literacy programs. Therefore, the understanding of libraries as mere storage for books and collections needs to be updated. “Libraries can no longer be seen just as places for storing books. There has been a transformation in their function,” he asserted. “Now, they serve as venues for people to engage and develop their creativity through the facilities provided,” Aminudin Aziz added. He stressed that community literacy can be improved with the support of library resources such as manuscripts, collections, and networks. “As the head, I will solidify the programs initiated over the past 13 months to make them more structured and widespread,” he affirmed. In 2024, there are three main programs initiated during the tenure of E. Aminudin Aziz as the Acting Head of the National Library. These programs focus on improving reading culture and literacy skills, promoting Indonesian manuscripts, and standardizing and accrediting libraries. He expressed his commitment to support these priority programs and collaborate with ministries and other institutions that share similar goals, aiming to enhance literacy among the Indonesian public and school students through facilities provided by libraries. E. Aminudin Aziz was appointed as Acting Head of the National Library on November 23, 2023. Since May 8, 2020, he has served as the Head of the Language Development and Cultivation Agency. In addition to being an active lecturer and researcher in linguistics, particularly in Pragmatics (Language Politeness Theory), he has held various positions at the University of Education Indonesia (UPI). By the end of 2024, he was recognized as one of the 100 influential people in artificial intelligence by Time Magazine (TIME100 AI 2024) for his efforts in preserving over 700 regional languages through the Language Development and Cultivation Agency of the Ministry of Education and Culture. The agency also developed AI tools and created over 350 dictionaries for unique languages. Since July 2016, he has been assigned as the Education and Culture Attaché at the Indonesian Embassy in London. From 2010 to 2011, he was the Head of the Language Center at the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia. He completed his Ph.D. in Linguistics at Monash University, Australia, from 1997 to 2000, and earned his Master of Arts in Linguistics at the same university from 1994 to 1996. He obtained his diploma and bachelor's degree in English Education from the University of Education Indonesia (1986-1991) in Bandung.
